The good news is that laser range finders are getting better and better as technology advances, and the prices are coming down so there is no excuse not to own one.
What is Your Desired Range of Your Rangefinder?
The truth is the advertised max range on a rangefinder is for ideal conditions for a reflective target.
A laser rangefinder projects a laser beam onto the target. That laser beam bounces off the target and back to the rangefinder and that is how the rangefinder determines the distance. If the surface of the target is not very reflective, like a deer, the range finder has a hard time getting the info it needs.
If you need a rangefinder that can range for say 1000 yards reliably for all targets, like a deer that is not reflective, get a rangefinder with a max range of 2000 yards which is twice that distance.
Keep in mind, as a rule, cheap range finders in the sub 250 dollar range perform even more poorly. For a cheap rangefinder, the max range may be 1000 meters, but if your target is not reflective, like a steel plate on a tree, cut that max range in half to 500 meters. If your target is an animal, the range will be even less.
If you need a great 1000 yard rangefinder or a one mile rangefinder, I recommend the Sig Sauer Kilo 2200 BDX Laser Rangefinder or the Vortex Optics Razor HD 4000 Laser Rangefinder.

What sets a long range rangefinder apart from a golf rangefinder is the magnification. In golf, you just don’t need the range that you do in long range shooting.
